Sustainable Farm Model Featured at Heritage Day in Jamesport, MO

Jamesport, Missouri is in the "Show Me State," but we are here to show you our unique culture.This is the place to celebrate the fall season. The lifestyle of the "plain people". Jamesport's "Step Back in Time" Heritage Day will be Saturday, September 27, all day- one day. The countryside is dotted with homes and businesses where you can interact with the Amish, Mennonite and German-Baptist lifestyles of the people living there. We invite you to, " Step back in Time." 2003 marks the 50th year since the first settlers of the Amish Colony arrived in Jamesport. The colony now numbers in excess of 150 families. Bus tours and step-on tour guides are available to give an informative tour.

This will be a day filled with lost arts and skills demonstrations in festival park. A 12x14 cedar log cabin will be erected during the day for visitors to view. Good Life Family Farm and Friendly Corners, a model of a sustainable farm and a community, conceived and constructed by the staffs of the Sustainable Agriculture Programs at the University of Missouri and Missouri Department of Agriculture, will be displayed, for the first-time in Jamesport.

Other demonstrations of spinning, hand crochet afghans, quilting, reed baskets, lye soap, vintage clothing, weaving, cross-stitch, scroll saw crafts, beeswax candles, beekeeping equipment, chair caning, rug braiding, dolls, dulcimers, Appalachian style baskets, and ropemaking. Apple butter cooked by heat from a steam engine. Many vendors at the outdoor craft show and fall produce featuring Vallisas flowers, pumpkins, Indian corn, gourds, apples, and dried flowers. Food vendors will have kettle corn, funnel cakes, honey, pork rinds, and barbecue to purchase in festival park

The entertainment will include the Village Dancers performing at 11:00 Am.. and 2:00 p.m.. Gospel music all day in the theater building.

Quilts will be on display all day at the United Methodist Church for a preview of the annual Quilt Auction October 11.

Outdoor family entertainment at the Smith's Cornfield Maze on both September 27 and 28 from 11:00 Am.. to 6:00 p.m.. Admission is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 children 12 and under. Special group rates on Sunday. A special Moonlight Maze will start Saturday night at dusk to 10:00 p.m.. They also have a Scare Crow Factory at the maze with the necessary materials to bring your scarecrow to life! Everything you will need to build, outfit and stuff your scarecrow for $15. Refreshments and baked goods will be available.

Horse drawn buggy rides are located downtown. Anytime visitors come to Jamesport they are amazed at the small town with over 42 antique and country shops. You can stay in one of several bed and breakfasts or the country inn. While you are there you can eat at several restaurants that specialize in large portions at low cost, of the best country cooking, anywhere. Or, you can take fresh bakery items home to enjoy from the bakeries of the community. The Amish owned farmer's market is another place to buy home grown produce, flowers, jams, jellies and baked goods. The fall harvest of apples, apple cider, pumpkins and gourds are available to purchase.

When you are traveling between country stores in your car or on a tour bus available, you will see the horse drawn implements in the fields or white-tailed deer that are raised by Amish farmers. Shocks of corn and wheat stand in the fields across the prairie.

Jamesport shares a plain lifestyle of people today. So, have a glass of cold apple cider and a donut with us, to enjoy the fall season.
