Southwest Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Sale
Joplin Regional Stockyards, Joplin, MO 5/21/10

Receipts: 206 Year Ago: 209

Sponsored by Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifers, Inc.,
Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association in cooperation
with University Extension, Commercial Agriculture Program, MU College of
Veterinary Medicine, Missouri Cattlemen's Association and the Missouri
Department of Agriculture.

All heifers in the sale have met minimum standards for reproductive
soundness, pelvic size, body condition and weight. A strict immunization
program has been followed including Brucellosis calf-hood vaccination and
tested negative to PI BVD. Heifers were bred to bulls meeting strict calv-
ing ease/birth weight EPD’s. Several were synchronized and artificially
bred. Projected calving dates were given with all heifers expected to calve
from mid-August thru November 30. The offering was screened for blemishes,
muscle, frame, body condition score (BCS), and disposition by a screening
committee, consisting of official graders from the Missouri Dept of Agri-
culture and USDA, then sorted into lots according to calving dates and sim-
ilar body types. There were 31 percent of the heifers artificially bred, 65
percent naturally bred with 4 percent mixed AI and natural. About 75 percent
of the heifers were black or black white face. The AI bred heifers averaged
1325.00 dollars per head and the natural bred heifers averaged 1342.00. The
quality, type and condition of the offering was good and most heifers were
in the 2nd and a few in the 3rd stage. There was a moderate size attendance
at the auction with a few lots sold by on-line video. Sale average for the
206 head was 1336.00 which was 105.00/hd. more than the May 2009 sale.
