South Central Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Sale

Coordinated by Missouri "Show-Me-Select" Replacement Heifers, Inc.,
in cooperation with University Extension, Commercial Agriculture Program,
MU College of Veterinary Medicine, The Missouri Cattlemen’s Association
and the Missouri Department of Agriculture/USDA. All heifers in the sale
met minimum standards for reproductive soundness, pelvic size, body condition
and weight. They had also undergone a comprehensive health program, and were
guaranteed bred to easy calving bulls. Projected calving dates were given for
all lots and expected to start calving the first of September thru mid-November.
The offering was screened for blemishes, muscle, frame, body condition score
(BCS), and disposition by a screening committee, consisting of official graders
from the Missouri Dept of Agriculture/USDA, then sorted into lots according to
calving dates and similar body types where permissible. The majority were
natural bred heifers, with 15 percent artificially bred and 04 percent mixed.
Quality and condition was average to mostly good, and consigned by 7 area
producers and purchased by 15 different buyers. The 42 lots averaged 1024 lbs
and sold for a dollar average of l259.00 per head. Demand started off good,
picked up momentum, especially in the latter half, as the auction worked it’s
way into the larger, but fewer producer’s nice uniform high quality, some fancy,
groups at the tail-end of the sale and too, some buyers were squeezed somewhat
having to push a little extra due to the narrow supply.
Replacement Bred Heifers: Medium to mostly Large 1-2 870-1050 lbs first
half of sale 1050.00-1350.00 per head, w/couple pkgs 4 head 975.00-1000.00,
latter half predominately Red Angus/Red Angus cross 925-1100 lbs 1200.00-
1520.00. Large 1-2 1050-1350 lbs 1150.00-1350.00 per head, pkg 2 head 1305
lbs 1500.00.
