Southwest Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Sale

with University Extension, Commercial Agriculture Program, MU College
of Veterinary Medicine, The Missouri Cattlemen's Association and the
Missouri Department of Agriculture.
All heifers in the sale have met minimum standards for reproductive
soundness, pelvic size, body condition and weight. They have also under-
gone a comprehensive health program, and were guaranteed bred to easy
calving bulls. Several were synchronized and artificially bred. Projected
calving dates were given for all lots with all heifers expected to calve
from mid-August thru January 30. The offering was screened for blemishes,
muscle, frame, body condition score (BCS), and disposition by a screening
committee, consisting of official graders from the Missouri Dept of Agri-
culture and USDA, then sorted into lots according to calving dates and sim-
ilar body types. There were 36 percent of the heifers artificially bred,
and 56 percent naturally bred with 8 percent in mixed lots of natural and
AI, about 90 percent were black or black white face. The AI bred heifers
averaged 135.00 dollars more per head than natural bred heifers. The qual-
ity, type and condition of the bulk of the offering was very good. Most in-
dividuals in the audience were prospective buyers and only a few spectators.
It was speculated that many of those typically in attendance were harvesting
hay and/or chasing army worms. Sale average for the 184 head was 1273.00.
Replacement Bred Heifers: Large 1 1138-1375 lbs mostly 2nd stage few
3rd stage 1225.00-1450.00 per head. Large 1-2 1105-1245 2nd stage 1125.00-
1375.00 per head, pkg. black white face with Brahman influence 1450.00.
Medium and Large 1 993-1170 lbs 2nd and 3rd stage 1300.00-1450.00. Medium
and Large 1-2 2nd and 3rd stage 943-1145 lbs 1100.00-1325.00, pkg. black
white face with Brahman influence 1400.00. Medium 1 2nd and 3rd stage 950-
986 lbs 1300.00-1325.00. Medium 1-2 mostly 2nd stage 855-980 lbs 1025.00-
1250.00. Medium and Large 2 2nd stage 842-1030 lbs 1000.00-1175.00.
