Southwest Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Sale
Joplin Regional Stockyards, Joplin, MO 5/19/06
Receipts: 213 Year Ago: 308
Coordinated by Missouri “Show-Me-Select” Replacement Heifers, Inc.,
Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association in cooperation
with University Extension, Commercial Agriculture Program, MU College
of Veterinary Medicine, The Missouri Cattlemen's Association and the
Missouri Department of Agriculture.
All heifers in the sale have met minimum standards for reproductive
soundness, pelvic size, body condition and weight. They have also under-
gone a comprehensive health program, and were guaranteed bred to easy
calving bulls. Several were synchronized and artificially bred. Projected
calving dates were given for all lots with all heifers expected to calve
from mid-August thru November 30. The offering was screened for blemishes,
muscle, frame, body condition score (BSC), and disposition by a screening
committee, consisting of official graders from the Missouri Dept of Agri-
culture and USDA, then sorted into lots according to calving dates and
similar body types. There were 38 percent of the heifers artificially bred,
and 60 percent naturally bred with 2 percent in mixed lots of natural and
AI, 90 percent were black or black white face. The AI bred heifers averaged
133.00 dollars more per head than natural bred heifers. The quality, type
and condition of the bulk of the offering was very good. Even though area
producers have just been thru one of the most severe dry periods they have
experienced in a long time the demand for these quality heifers of known
background was good. Sale average for the 213 head was 1346.00.
