Sho-Me Select Replacement Bred Heifer Sale for 05/17/2003

   Coordinated by University of Missouri Extension, University of
Missouri Commercial Agriculture Program, MU College of Veterinary
Medicine, Missouri Cattlemen's Association and Missouri Department
of Agriculture.  All heifers having met minimum standards for
reproductive soundness, pelvic size, body condition and weight. They
had also undergone a comprehensive health program, and were guaranteed
bred to easy calving bulls, many being artificially bred.  These
heifers were expected for the most part to calve from September thru
first part of November 2003, with projected calving dates given for
each lot of heifers. Majority of these heifers (83% percent) were black
and black baldies, with remainder Red Angus, Hereford, Simmental and
Gelbvieh crosses. Saturday’s consignments of better quality bred
heifers attracted considerable attention.  Supply made up mainly of
Medium to mostly Large 1 to mostly 2’s.  Demand moderate to mostly
good.  The offering was screened, graded, body condition scored (BCS)
by Official MO Dept of Agriculture/USDA Graders, then sorted into lots
according to calving dates and body type similarity where permissible.
Sale average price of the 83 lots was 931.00 dollars per head, with top
set of Registered Blk Angus selling at 1375.00.00 and top set of Red
Angus-Gelbvieh crosses at 1225.00.

   Bred Heifers:  Medium to mostly Large 1 to mostly 2  800-1150 lbs
825.00-1000.00 per head;  3 lots Large 1  Red Angus and Red Angus/
Gelbvieb Crosses 1025-1070 lbs 1025.00-1225.00, small pkg Medium and
Large 1-2 Blk Baldies 928 lbs 810.00.  Registered Blk Angus Large 1 
few 2  900-1050 lbs 975.00-1125.00; 1065-1200 lbs 1050.00-1300.00,
