"Show-Me-Select" Replacement Heifer Program - AgEBB

Southeast Missouri
"Show-Me-Select"
Heifer Sale

November 5, 2003

TO: Prospective Buyers and Guests:

Welcome to the sixth Southeast Missouri Show-Me-Select Spring Calving Replacement Heifer Sale. The fourth Southeast Fall Calving Sale was held in May and it was a huge success with heifers averaging $1147. The last four sales have averaged $1040 on 965 heifers. The preg checks were started in late June and the open heifers from some of these herds were placed on feed and have already gone to market as finished cattle. They have averaged right at $1100 at U.S. Premium Beef.

The 220 heifers in this sale were started from 965 heifers and I have individually sifted and sorted all except for nine heifers. The breeding work is already done and some will start calving in 2 months. Guaranteed bred heifers, and not having to feed and take care of the heifer that did not breed is worth about $250 - $300 per heifer to you. Remember, those heifers are guaranteed bred for 30 days after you buy them. Contact the consignor before 30 days if you suspect one is open.

The genetics on most of these heifers is excellent with 6-7 generations of stacked pedigrees in several of the herds. Also some have been sending cattle to U.S. Premium Beef for processing and have carcass data on steer mates to the heifers. There are some that had a $238 per head premium on steers. If you as producers are wanting to develop a herd, 20 years of selections are already done on some of the consignments.

There are 171 black, 35 black white face, 2 gray, 5 white and 7 red heifers in the sale. There are 38 Purebred Angus with 2 that are registered also in the sale.

If you are wanting A.I. lots there are many all A.I. lots and there are 99 heifers pregnancy checked A.I. bred. Most of the heifers were fed MGA, and given Lutalyse for estrus synchronization. Even the herds that did not A.I. synchronized their heifers. A couple herds used the new CIDR Implant.

Consignors are listed in alphabetical order so the sale order will be different. The catalog has footnotes and the sorts are already given for your use. The sorts are not in sale order but will give you an idea of how many, what color and whether they are A.I. bred in each lot. I have also included accuracy on the EPD's and also Carcass and Scrotal EPD's on A.I. sires. Remember, the higher the accuracy towards .90 or above the more reliable the data is in selection.

Thanks for attending the Sale, or just studying the catalog. If you have questions feel free to call me at 573-243-3581 or call the consignor at the number listed.

Sincerely,

Roger Eakins Livestock Specialist
