Growing Season Weather Summary at the Rice Farm for 2001

Pat Guinan
Green Line

Annual precipitation was above normal on the Rice Farm but that was not the case for most of the year. Below normal rainfall was recorded for 8 months with 7 consecutive below normal months beginning in March. By the end of September the deficit was approaching 10 inches for the year. The dry weather pattern changed during autumn and remained moist through December. Between October and December, 20.91" of rain had fallen, which was nearly 200% of normal.

Spring was mild as April temperatures climbed into the 80's for twelve days and averaged 5.5° above normal for the month. Summertime temperatures were seasonable with no extended heatwaves. This was fortunate, since dry conditions existed and heat stress was not too prolonged or extreme on the crops. Early to mid autumn was relatively cool but a shift in the weather pattern during November and December brought above normal temperatures. Indian summer like weather persisted up to the holidays.
