Pecan

Powdery mildew (fungus) Powdery surface growth on foliage and nuts. Plant resistant varieties. Fungicides with the active ingredients, benomyl, propiconozole or thiophanate-methyl are labeled.

Scab (fungus)
(See MU publication MP 711)
This is the most destructive disease of pecans. The fungus attacks leaves and nuts. The disease appears as elongated olive-brown spots. Later these spots turn black. Spots on nuts are black and frequently coalesce. The entire surface may become covered, and the nuts will remain small or drop. Plant resistant or tolerant varieties(see MU Publication MP 711 for listing). Rake leaves and husks during the winter to remove inoculum sources. Prune branches and surrounding vegetation to promote better air circulation. Apply preventative fungicides beginning at budbreak followed by 2 to 3 more applications 10 to 14 days apart. As leaves mature, application intervals can be extended to 21 days and continued until weather conditions become drier. Fungicides with the active ingredients, benomyl, propiconazole and copper are labeled. See MU publication MP 711 for specific products and timing.
