Health Insurance Program in Branson Sept. 21
Focues on Special Enrollment Periods

FORSYTH, Mo. - University of Missouri Extension is reaching out to local communities to help families, individuals and businesses understand their options and responsibilities under the Affordable Care Act.

The Branson class will be taught from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept 21 at the Taney County OACAC Neighborhood Center, 610 S 6th St Ste 202, Branson. Registration is required to attend this free program and can be made by contacting Taney County OACAC at (417) 239-1882.

The program is part of MU Extension's Health Insurance Education Initiative. It will be presented by Nellie Lamers, MU Extension family financial education specialist.

According to Lamers citizens may quality for a special enrollment period because of certain life events, including a change in job status, graduating from college, or a change in family size, for example.

"The Affordable Care Act is currently still the law and without an exemption citizens will have to pay the shared responsibility payment (better known as the health insurance penalty) if they do not have health insurance," said Lamers.

"The Health Insurance Education Initiative will help Show-Me State citizens understand their health insurance options and learn how to get help in their own communities if they choose to enroll in Missouri's health insurance marketplace," said Brenda Procter, associate professor of consumer and family economics for MU Extension.

A website, at extension.missouri.edu/insure, provides educational materials and links to information. "The website is a source to learn factual, unbiased information about the changes in health insurance that are required by the law," Procter said.

MU Extension's Health Insurance Education Initiative website also provides a map of Missouri educators who can provide local workshops and a calendar where you can learn about upcoming events near you.
