"Direct Marketing of Farm Products" Topic of Three-
Part Workshop in Mountain Grove Starting March 17

MOUNTAIN GROVE, Mo. - Direct marketing is a method of capturing higher margins and increased profitability from farm produce and animal products according to Ted Probert, dairy specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

"Many consumers prefer to buy food straight from the farmer, making direct marketing a win/win proposition for farmers and consumers alike," said Probert.

A series of workshops dealing with direct marketing of farm products is planned for the Missouri State University Fruit Experiment Station, 9740 Red Spring Road, Mountain Grove, beginning on March 17.

"The workshops are designed to assist producers of agriculture products as they work to add direct marketing to their farm business plan," said Probert.

Session 1: March 17, 1:00 p.m., is entitled, "Getting Started - Planning the Business and Developing a Marketing Strategy." Willis Mushrush, a business specialist with MU Extension, and Jim Spencer, a farm management specialist with MU Extension, will present this session.

Session 2: April 19, 1:00 p.m., is entitled, "Direct Marketing Animal Products - Rules, Regulations & Practical Tips." Brad Hughes and Rebecca Dowden, Compliance Officers with Missouri Department of Agriculture, Meat, and Poultry Inspection, will present this session. Also, "Personal Experiences with Direct Marketing Beef, Lamb, and Pork," will be presented by Dr. Beth Walker, associate professor at Missouri State University and a livestock producer and marketer.

Session 3: June 8, 2017, 5:00 p.m., is entitled, "Direct Marketing Produce." Patrick Byers, horticulture specialist with MU Extension, will teach this session.

There are three options for attending this series. Producers interested in marketing animal products can enroll in sessions 1 and 2 for a fee of $20. Those interested in marketing horticultural products can enroll in sessions 1 and 3 for $20. Anyone who would like to attend all three workshops may do so for $25.

The Wright County Extension office is located inside the Missouri State University Fruit Experiment Station at 9740 Red Spring Road, Mountain Grove, Mo. Funding and support for the local office comes from the Wright County Commission, MSU, and City of Mountain Grove. MSU provides Wright County Extension with office and classroom space as part of a joint sponsorship and programming agreement signed in 2015.
