Make Plans to Visit the Master Gardeners of Greene County
Vegetable Garden at the Springfield Gardens

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Master Gardeners of Greene County - with leadership from Carl Redmon, Nancy Chambers, and Denise Fleetwood — have redesigned their vegetable garden for the 2018 season opting for a traditional backyard vegetable garden design.

The Demonstration Garden is located at the Springfield Botanical Gardens, 2400 S. Scenic Ave. Springfield, Missouri 65807. The gardens are open dawn to dusk and admission is free.

"Homeowners are more interested than ever in growing healthy food for their families in their own backyards. The Master Gardeners wanted to highlight some easy-to-replicate ideas for visitors to try at their own homes," said Kelly McGowan, horticulture educator with University of Missouri Extension and coordinator of the local Master Gardener chapter.

Visitors to the garden will be able to see several different tomato cultivars including different trellising system ideas, squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, potatoes, sweet potatoes, horseradish, peppers, green beans (both pole and bush types) and sweet corn.

There are also unique plants on display including espalier apples (four different cultivars), mushrooms, figs, container gardening ideas, and straw bale gardening ideas.

In addition to the beautiful vegetable garden, visitors can see a wide variety of herbs, native plants, ornamental and flowering plants, options for shady areas, and much more.
