Show-Me-Select Bred Heifer Sale is May 18 in Carthage

MT. VERNON, Mo. — The 38th sale of bred Show-Me-Select heifers due to calve this fall will be May 18 at Joplin Regional Stockyards, Carthage.

The offering of 200 head is down from recent sales according to Eldon Cole, livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

"There are several reasons consignments are down despite the number given at the prebreeding exam was about the same as in the past sales," said Cole

Even though numbers are down from the usual 325 head or more, the quality is maintained as in the past. There are four first-time consignors, several Tier Two heifers along with a number of Show-Me-Plus heifers. The latter are heifers who have been genomic/DNA tested.

Crossbred heifers make up about 90 percent of the offering with Hereford, Angus, both red and black, the dominant breeds. Expected calving dates, based on AI breeding and ultrasound preg checks will run from late August to late October.

The sale begins at 7 p.m. on the May 18 at the Joplin Stockyards. Heifers will be lined up for inspection by 4 p.m. The pre-sale catalog may currently be viewed on line at:

Catalogs are available by contacting the Lawrence County University of Missouri Extension Center, Mt. Vernon at 417-466-3102.
