350 Show-Me-Select Heifers to Sell Nov. 20

The 21st sale of Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifers begins at 7 p.m., Nov. 20 at the Joplin Regional Stockyards, 10131 Cimarron Rd., Carthage, Mo.

The offering consists of 350 head of commercial heifers due to calve from Feb. 1 to April 30, according to Eldon Cole, a University Extension livestock specialist.

"The majority of the heifers are Angus-based, either black or red, and all are bred to calving ease bulls," said Cole.

Service sires are primarily Angus including artificially used sires RAB-EGL Blue Moon 4407M, Sinclair Extra 4 x 13, Brooks Night Off 309, HA Image Maker 0415, HARB Pendleton 765 JH, Mytty In Focus and Genetics by Design 049.

The Show-Me-Select program is a cooperative effort led by University of Missouri Extension staff and involves the latest technology in developing beef heifers.

"The sales of these heifers have been very successful as buyers are discovering they can purchase heifers as economically as they can raise them, or more so," said Cole.

Buyers can also improve their genetics for other traits as they cull off lower quality cows and replace them with SMS heifers.

"Pasture and hay supplies are abundant in southwest Missouri this year and that should enable beef cow-calf folks to pick up a few top-quality replacements at this sale," said Cole.

The pre-sale catalog is available online at http://extension.missouri.edu/lawrence or by calling Cole at (417) 466-3102.
