Greene County Extension Specialist Testifies in D.C. About Census Partnership
Dr. Tim Siebert, urban program specialist with University of Missouri Extension and the county program director in Greene County, was selected to testify in Washington, D. C. on Oct. 29 about the partnership between the 2010 U.S. Census and MU Extension.
"I was asked to make a presentation to the Racial and Ethnic Advisory Council, which is an internal council committee housed within the Department of Commerce," said Siebert.
The presentation focused on the University of Missouri Extension's statewide approach to partnering and sharing ideas to enhance efforts related to the 2010 U.S. Census.
"Of all the states, the Missouri Census office has been a leader in this area and it is thought to be in large part due to the partnership with the University of Missouri Extension," said Siebert. "I will discuss our partnership with the 2010 U.S. Census and the strategies we are implementing to help get a complete count of the population in Missouri."
The Census Bureau began seeking advice from REAC beginning in 1970.˙ Five separate race and ethnic committees advise the Census Bureau on decennial issues:˙ the African American, American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN), Asian, Hispanic, and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander (NHOP) Advisory Committees.
REAC provides a continuing channel of communication between the Census Bureau and race and ethnic communities, focusing on˙strategies to reduce the undercount, data collection and enumeration strategies, geographic and data products for American Indian and Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders, tabulation of race and ethnic data, data dissemination and outreach/promotion.
REAC advice and recommendations are reported directly to the Census Director.
All of Siebert's expenses for the trip were paid for by the 2010 U.S. Census.
