Workshop for farmers market
vendors is Friday in Kirksville

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - A local foods workshop to help farmers markets vendors increase sales is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, in Kirksville at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Adair County.

The session gives farmers market vendors an opportunity to learn how to market their produce and increase sales. MU Extension specialists will give information on how to display produce to attract customers. They also will discuss the importance of signs, pamphlets and other marketing tools.

MU Extension horticulture specialist Jennifer Schutter says vendors will learn how to give samples of their products in accordance with health regulations. "We know that sampling at the market can increase sales and customer loyalty, but it must be done right to protect the vendors and their customers," says Schutter.

Vendors will learn food safety regulations for preparing and giving away samples at farmers markets. This covers food storage and handling procedures. Farmers market vendors must follow Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services regulations and county health codes.

Schutter worked with vendors last year and says they saw increased sales. "For example, one producer with Asian pears reported an increase in sales," she says. "He stated that more people are now aware of what an Asian pear tastes like and would be more likely to purchase them in the future." Other producers reported that they sold out of items offered for taste-testing.

USDA Farmers Market Promotion Program provided grant funds for the program, which ends this year. MU Extension nutrition specialists, nutrition associates and horticulturists gave demonstrations in Chillicothe, Lawson, St. Joseph, Maryville, Hillsboro, De Soto, Raytown, Belton, Unionville, Kirksville, Harrisonville, Nevada, Webb City, Memphis, Parkville and Gladstone.

The Adair County MU Extension Center is at 503 E. Northtown Road, Kirksville. For more information, contact Schutter at 660-665-9866 or schutterjl@missouri.edu.
