Rice Farm Field Day planned

GLENNONVILLE, Mo. - University of Missouri Extension is hosting the 2006 Missouri Rice Farm Field Day Aug. 23 at the Missouri Rice Research and Demonstration Farm, near Glennonville, Mo.

There will be a dozen presentations with experts from the University of Missouri-Columbia, Southeast Missouri State University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services, the Missouri Rice Research and Merchandising Council, and the U.S. Rice Producers Association.

Subjects covered will include, rice weed control, by Andy Kendig, of the MU Delta Research Center; a rice variety update, by Donn Beighley, of Southeast Missouri State University; bird control research, by Robert Byrd, of the USDA; Asian soybean rust, by Allen Wrather, of the Delta Research Center; developing overseas markets for rice, by Dwight Roberts and Greg Yielding, both of the U.S. Rice Producers Association; and how to use research from fields and small plots on your farm, by David Dunn, of the Delta Research Center.

The field day runs from 8 a.m. until lunch and is free and open to the public. Media are welcome to attend.

It's sponsored by the Missouri Rice Research and Merchandising Council, MU Extension, MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Southeast Missouri State University and more than 20 businesses.

The Missouri Rice Research and Demonstration Farm is a facility of the Missouri Rice Research and Merchandising Council where trials are done by researchers from MU, Southeast Missouri State University, the USDA and others.
