Crop farmers' tour planned at MU Graves-Chapple Farm
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Experts with University of Missouri will be answering farmers' questions and discussing current corn, soybean and forage problems and solutions at the Graves-Chapple Farm 18th Annual Crop Farmers' Tour, Aug. 22.
The field day will include three field tours focusing on subjects including herbicide resistance, soybean insects, soybean fungicides, rootworm management, nitrogen management, fall application herbicides and right-of-way brush control.
"We tried to schedule things based on the questions coming into the office over the past year," said Jim Crawford, University of Missouri Extension natural resource engineer. "Glyphosate resistant weeds are something we're getting questions on. It is something people are becoming more aware of. It's something people are definitely paying attention to."
Experts also will discuss Asian soybean rust treatments and give reports on this year's insect activity.
Crawford said that he expects, based on previous years, about 175 people to come to the event.
"It's free and open to the public. We would like to encourage everyone to come by," Crawford said.
The tour includes a free barbecue pork lunch; ice cream, courtesy of Missouri Valley Ag; and soy doughnuts, courtesy of the Missouri Farm Bureau. Media are welcome.
The tour runs from 9 a.m. into the afternoon hours. Graves-Chapple Farm is near Corning, Mo. Take Interstate 29 to three miles north of Exit 99. Follow the signs on the east outer road.
The program is sponsored by MU Extension and the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.
