Crop pest, weed field day set for July 12
at MU Bradford Farm east of Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. - A revamped Weed and Pest Management Field Day, July 12 at the University of Missouri will feature topics from fungicide treatments of soybean seeds, to predicting black cutworm damage in corn fields, to herbicide-resistant weeds.

"There will be hundreds of weed-management research plots to view," said Kevin Bradley, MU Extension weed specialist. "We’ve added stops on other crop pests as well."

The field day will be at the MU Bradford Research and Extension Center east of Columbia. Tours start at 8:30 a.m.

In addition to presentations by weed scientists, there will be talks by MU Extension specialists in plant pathology, entomology, agronomy and economics.

Entomologists will discuss control tactics for cutworms, soybean aphids and soybean leaf beetles.

Pathologists have research on soybean foliar fungicides. This will lead into an update on the soybean rust threat.

MU economists will be on hand to discuss the financial impact of weed control in field crops.

Weed scientists will tell of invasive weeds, particularly those on Missouri roadsides. Research results from across the state will be shared.

"We’ll have a special stop on experimental herbicides and cropping systems that have been tested for only a couple of years," Bradley said. "Some of these will be released onto the market in the near future."

Tours run all morning. After lunch, visitors can return to examine the research plots on their own. All who register will receive a plot-book showing the treatments being used on the MU farm.

Researchers will be available to answer questions.

The field day is for farmers and certified crop advisors (CCAs.) The university will grant two continuing education credits to CCAs.

A $20 registration fee collected at check-in covers lunch and handouts.

Advance registrations are due by July 8 with Thresa Chism at (573) 884-7945 or by e-mail at chismt@missouri.edu

Bradford Farm, a part of the MU Agricultural Experiment Station, is 7 miles east of Columbia, south of Highway WW on Rangeline Road.
