NORTH CALLAWAY FFA WINS TOP CHAPTER AWARD COLUMBIA, Mo., April 16, 2009 – North Callaway FFA placed seventh out of 317 chapters in the state, earning a Top Chapter Award at the 81st Missouri FFA Convention. Only 10 percent of state chapters receive the Top Chapter Award each year. Chapter activity awards, sponsored by FCS Financial, are given to chapters achieving excellence in student, chapter and community development. North Callaway FFA Chapter advisors are Clint Smith and Katie Milhollin. The North Callaway FFA student development activities include sending members to leadership conferences as well as after meeting activities to promote both mental and physical confidence. Members are encouraged to have strong Supervised Agricultural Experience Projects. If students maintain a 3.00 grade point they are posted on the North Callaway Agricultural Honor Roll. Chapter development activities are designed to promote excellence within the chapter. North Callaway FFA members make recruitment presentations to eighth graders, explaining the experiences and the benefits of FFA and agricultural education. Fundraisers teach members about organization management, public relations and responsibility while working toward a chapter goal. Each year North Callaway FFA sells fruit, meats and honey. The chapter made over $40,000 in sales the past year. North Callaway FFA members’ community development includes an annual senior citizen prom. Member's are in charge of everything from organizing the event to setting up and tearing down. Senior citizens come from up to 60 miles away to attend the prom. The top chapters are submitted to the National FFA Organization where they compete for the National FFA Chapter Award. The competition will be this fall at the National FFA convention in Indianapolis, Ind. The Missouri FFA has 24,410 members representing 317 chapters. The national organization has over 507,000 members representing 7,439 local chapters in 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands.
