Samantha Honan Second Place Winner of 2009 Missouri FFA Diversified Horticulture Proficiency Award

COLUMBIA , Mo., April 16, 2009 –Samantha Honan, of the West Nodaway FFA Chapter, Burlington Junction, Mo. Was named the second place winner in the FFA Diversified Horticulture Proficiency Award at the 81st Missouri State FFA Convention.

 

Honan , a graduate at West Nodaway Co. R-I, is the daughter of Phil and Debbie Honan. Her FFA advisor is Ken Wilmes.

 

As a member of the West Nodaway FFA Chapter, Honan has participated in the National FFA convention, Washington Leadership Conference and received the agriculture communication proficiency award.

 

Outside of FFA, Honan participated in cheerleading, volleyball and basketball. Honan also participated in Family Career Community Leaders of America, Future Business Leaders of America and is a member of the United Methodist Church of Blanchard, Iowa. 

 

Honan began her Supervised Agricultural Experience Program (SAE) working at Hurst Greenery in Westboro. She had to plant bedding plants, prepare for the greenhouses to open and to arrange hanging baskets, flats, and pots.

 

Honan is a freshman at Northwest Missouri State University studying agriculture education. After graduation, Honan plans to teach at an urban school where she will focus on horticulture.

 

Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while gaining hands-on career experience.  Diversified Horticulture is one of 47 proficiency awards presented at the state level. 

 

The Missouri FFA Association sponsored this award.

 

The Missouri FFA has 24,410 members representing 317 chapters.  The national organization has more than 507,000 member representing 7,439 local chapters in 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands .
