Amanda Amos Second Place 2009 Missouri FFA Diversified Agricultural Production Entrepreneurship and Placement Proficiency Award

COLUMBIA, Mo., April 16, 2009 – Amanda Amos, South Nodaway FFA Chapter, Guilford, Mo., was named the second place of the Diversified Agricultural Production Proficiency Entrepreneurship & Placement Combined Proficiency Award at the 81st Missouri FFA Convention.

 

Amos is a graduate of South Nodaway High School . She is the daughter of Ray and LaDonna Giffin of Guilford . Her agriculture advisor is Nicki Walker.

 

Amos has been very active in her FFA chapter. At the chapter level, she has been the agriculture awareness committee chairperson, healthy lifestyles committee chairperson and chapter reporter. She has been awarded the State FFA Leadership Camp medal, Area Specialty Crop Production Proficiency award, 1st Place Area FFA Scrapbook CDE and State FFA Degree at the state level. Amos has also attended Washington Leadership Conference in 2007 and National FFA Convention in 2006.

 

Amos joined FFA during her sophomore year and had already started on her SAE project of breeding cattle. Wanting a more diverse project, she obtained a loan to purchase 40 goats. While preparing for the arrival of the goats, she continued to work with cattle when they started calving. She then added broiler chickens and a milk cow to her SAE project. Amos also grows and harvesters popcorn. She learned certain skills such as over coming difficult obstacles and decision-making. Being in the livestock industry she has gained knowledge about animal nutrition.

 

Amos plans to continue raising goats and cattle along with selling popcorn.

 

Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while gaining hands-on career experience. Diversified Agricultural Production is one of 47 proficiency awards presented at state level. Missouri Farmer Today sponsored the award.

 

The Missouri FFA has 24,410 members representing 317 chapters. The national organization has over 507,000 members representing 7,439 local chapters in 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands .

 

The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
