James D. Moore State Winner 2009 Missouri FFA Swine Production-Placement Proficiency Award

COLUMBIA , Mo., April 16, 2009 – James D. Moore, of the Sheldon FFA Chapter, Sheldon, Mo., has won the FFA Swine Production Placement Proficiency Award at the 81st Missouri FFA Convention.

Moore, a senior at Sheldon High School, is the son of Jerri Moore and Karen Turmer. Moore ’s FFA advisor is Blake Harper.

In the FFA, Moore was active and attended local area, state and national events. He attended the 2006 National FFA Convention, Missouri Farm Bureau statewide leadership day, and was a 2008 Missouri State Fair exhibitor.

Moore ’s Supervised Agricultural Experience Program (SAE) began on his grandfather’s farm. Moore worked with all aspects of the farm from field work to cattle work. This sparked his interest for livestock. Next, he moved to work for Murphy Farms where he continues to work today. His initial work included castrating, feeding and treating hogs. As he gained experience, he also gained responsibility. He has been trained as a weekend artificial insemination sow breeder. Moore plans to continue working at Murphy’s with aspirations to become a farm manager.

Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while gaining hands-on career experiences. Swine Production is one of 47 proficiency awards presented at state level. The Missouri Pork Producers Association sponsored this award.

The Missouri FFA has 24,410 members representing 317 chapters. The national organization had more than 507,000 members representing 7,439 local chapters in 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands .

The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
