MILLER RECEIVES SECOND PLACE MISSOURI FFA SPECIALTY CROP PRODUCTION PROFICIENCY AWARD

COLUMBIA , Mo., April 16, 2009 – Anecia Miller, a member of the North Shelby FFA Chapter, Bethel, Mo., was named the second place winner of the Specialty Crop Production Entrepreneurship and Placement Proficiency Award at the 81st Missouri FFA Convention.

Miller, a senior at North Shelby High School, is the daughter of Ted and Gerri Miller. Her FFA advisor is Shawn McEwen and Phillip Martin.

As a member of the FFA, Miller has attended the National and State FFA Conventions. She is an active member of the Hannibal Gold Traveling Softball Team and she also is a member of the North Shelby Marching Band. Miller is honored to be senior class vice president and she is a football and basketball cheerleader.

Miller’s Supervised Agriculture Experience Program (SAE) was motivated by her grandmother’s ideas to help her raise money to pay for college. Miller decided to plant a unique crop not raised primarily in Missouri : ginseng. By planting this crop she was able to help people with their herbal medicine treatments. The experience has taught her time management and organizational skills.

Her future plans are to attend college and continue to grow ginseng.

Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while gaining hands-on career experience. Specialty Crop Production Entrepreneurship and Placement is one of 47 proficiency awards presented at the state level. The Missouri FFA Association sponsors this award.

The Missouri FFA has 24,410 members representing 317 chapters.  The national organization has more than 507,000 members representing 7,439 local chapters in 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands .

The FFA Mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
