EAST NEWTON FFA WINS TOP CHAPTER AWARD COLUMBIA, Mo., April 16, 2009– East Newton FFA placed 21st out of 317 chapters in the state, earning a Top Chapter Award at the 81st Missouri FFA Convention. Only 10 percent of state chapters receive the Top Chapter Award each year. Chapter activity awards, sponsored by FCS Financial, are given to chapters achieving excellence in student, chapter and community development. East Newton FFA Chapter advisors are Duane Kaiser and John Littlefield. The East Newton FFA student development activities included attending leadership activities that promoted leadership growth among the FFA members. Members participated in an officer training conference, area and district greenhand motivational conferences, national and state conventions and advanced leadership development. Chapter development activities were designed to promote excellence within the chapter. A chapter booth was designed and displayed during open house at the beginning of the year. Recruitment programs were conducted at local elementary schools, and the advisors visited prospective students and their parents to discuss the agricultural education program and its benefits. East Newton’s community development included assisting the community by providing services for free or at a reduced cost. They built and repaired materials for farmers and grew plants at reduced prices. The East Newton chapter also participates in Christmas caroling and the Newtonia Fall Festival each year to reach out to the community. The top chapters are submitted to the National FFA Organization where they compete for the National FFA Chapter Award. The competition will be this fall at the National FFA convention in Indianapolis, Ind. The Missouri FFA has 24,410 members representing 317 chapters. The national organization has over 507,000 members representing 7,439 local chapters in 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands.
