MCDONALD COUNTY FFA WINS TOP CHAPTER AWARD COLUMBIA, Mo., April 16, 2009 – McDonald County FFA placed 23rd out of 317 chapters in the state, earning a Top Chapter Award at the 81st Missouri FFA Convention. Only 10 percent of state chapters receive the Top Chapter Award each year. Chapter activity awards, sponsored by FCS Financial, are given to chapters achieving excellence in student, chapter and community development. McDonald County FFA Chapter advisors are Brian Nelson, Will Gordon and Robert Hall. The McDonald County FFA student development activities included attending leadership development activities, State FFA convention, National FFA convention, area and district greenhand motivational conferences as well as University of Missouri field day. All chapter members participated in social and recreational activities such as chapter barnwarming, summer meeting, ice cream socials, parent night, Farm Fest, hunter safety day, October Fest and an annual Christmas party. Chapter development activities are designed to promote excellence within the chapter. McDonald County FFA Chapter celebrated National FFA Week. FFA members conducted a teacher appreciation breakfast, wrote a special FFA edition article inserted into area newspapers, and designed bulletin boards highlighting FFA activities. Chapter members sold fruit, meat, shop projects and poinsettias. They also raised funds by hulling walnuts. This year they earned over $15,000. McDonald County’s community development included hosting a workers auction. The auction was held to assist in clean-up efforts after a devastating ice storm, with every member auctioned off to work within the community. The top chapters are submitted to the National FFA Organization where they compete for the National FFA Chapter Award. The competition will be this fall at the National FFA convention in Indianapolis, Ind. The Missouri FFA has 24,410 members representing 317 chapters. The national organization has over 507,000 members representing 7,439 local chapters in 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands.
