Photo available at: http://agebb.missouri.edu/news/moffaconv/CDE/pics/IMG_1635.JPG Whitmarsh wins Missouri FFA Advanced Prepared Public Speaking contest COLUMBIA , Mo., April 17, 2009 – Emily Whitmarsh, from the Miller FFA Chapter, placed first in the Missouri FFA Advanced Prepared Public Speaking contest at the 81st Missouri FFA Convention. Sixteen individuals were selected from six districts to compete at the state level. Whitmarsh’s FFA advisors are Jay Shepherd and Lyle Whittaker. MFA Inc. and the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources sponsored the event and plaques. Advanced Prepared Public Speakers deliver a six- to eight-minute speech based on an agricultural topic they have selected and researched. The contestants present their speech in front of a panel of judges and then undergo an additional five minutes of questions. The judges base their decision on the information presented orally, the speech’s content, the student’s knowledge of the subject, the delivery of the speech and answers to the questions. The Missouri FFA has 24,410 members representing 317 chapters. The national organization has more than 507,000 members representing 7,439 local chapters in 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands .
