SALYER WINS SECOND IN STATE FFA LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT PROFICIENCY AWARD

COLUMBIA , Mo., April 16, 2009 – Ed Salyer, of the Sarcoxie FFA Chapter, Sarcoxie, Mo., was named the second place winner of the Landscape Management Proficiency Award at the 81st Missouri FFA Convention.

 

Salyer, a junior at Sarcoxie R-II High School, is the son of Richard and Lori Salyer. His FFA advisors are Brenda Leap and Eugene Meyer.

 

As a member of the Sarcoxie FFA chapter, Salyer is very involved.  Salyer attended the Washington Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., in 2008. He also received a State Turfgrass Management Proficiency Award in 2008. Salyer is on the varsity football, baseball and basketball teams at Sarcoxie.

 

Salyer began his experience due to his family’s tradition in agriculture. His family owned many greenhouses, and he has worked alongside his mom and dad since he was 11. Salyer learned skills in advertising and time management through his Supervised Agricultural Experience project. Salyer is using his SAE to help pay for his college.

 

Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while gaining hands-on career experience.  Landscape Management is one of 47 proficiency awards presented at the state level.  The Missouri Landscape and Nursery Association sponsors this award.

 

The Missouri FFA Association has 24,410 members representing 317 chapters.  The national organization has more than 507,000 members representing 7,439 local chapters in 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands .

 

The FFA Mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
