Bobby Holmes PLACES 2nd 2009 MISSOURI FFA DAIRY PRODUCTION PLACEMENT PROFICIENCY AWARD COLUMBIA , Mo., April 16, 2009 – Bobby Holmes, of the Willow Springs FFA Chapter, Willow Springs, Mo., was named the 2nd place state winner of the FFA Dairy Production Placement Proficiency Award at the 81st Missouri FFA Convention. Holmes is the son of Kenny and Melody Gilbert. His FFA advisor is Nathan C. Sanders. Holmes’s Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) began working for Holmes Farm. His responsibilities were to take care of dairy nutrition, animal breeding systems and herd health programs. Holmes also cared for lactating cows in the milking rotation, dry cows, bottle calves and replacement heifers. In 2006 he began milking cattle for Radar Dairy Farms. Then Holmes expanded his SAE program helping in food science and technology by preventing off flavors in milk, milk testing, and record keeping system. He has developed many skills such as time management, properly keeping records, communication skills and has gained knowledge about animal nutrition. Holmes is attending college and still works at the dairy farm. Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while gaining hands-on career experience. The FFA Dairy Production Placement Proficiency Award is one of the 47 proficiency awards that will be awarded this year. It is sponsored by Midwest Dairy Association. The Missouri FFA has 24,410 members representing 317 chapters. The national organization has over 507,000 members representing 7,439 local chapters in 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands .
