UNION FFA WINS TOP CHAPTER AWARD COLUMBIA, Mo., April 16, 2009 – Union FFA placed sixth out of 317 chapters in the state, earning a Top Chapter Award at the 81st Missouri FFA Convention. Only 10 percent of state chapters receive the Top Chapter Award each year. Chapter activity awards, sponsored by FCS Financial, are given to chapters achieving excellence in student, chapter and community development. Union FFA Chapter advisors are Beth Hellebusch, Danielle Blair, and Jason Gross. The Union FFA chapter worked very hard to emphasize member participation. Many members volunteered during the completion of the Building Our American Communities Program. Examples of their community involvement included projects such as Operation Cleanstream, Adopt-a-Highway, emergency numbering system, landscaping and cemetery projects. Chapter development activities are designed to promote excellence within the chapter. Union FFA students hosted a two day recruitment program to eighth graders during their history class as part of Black History Month. During the first day members emphasized important black agriculturalists. On the second day students leadership skills were developed through teamwork activities and demonstrations. Community development allows members to help improve community’s economic, environmental and human resources. The Union FFA chapter took pride in maintaining an abandoned historical cemetery project. In order to preserve their heritage for future generations, members’ cleaned, repaired and refit two cemeteries, in diverse areas of the Union School District. The top chapters are submitted to the National FFA Organization where they compete for the National FFA Chapter Award. The competition will be this fall at the National FFA convention in Indianapolis, Ind. The Missouri FFA has 24,410 members representing 317 chapters. The national organization has over 507,000 members representing 7,439 local chapters in 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. The FFA Mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. -END- CAA-6-Union -RH
