Dairy Trends Missouri & Surrounding States
As of December 2004, Missouri had 1,767 permitted dairy operations.
Grade A dairy operations numbered 1,381, down 166 from December 2003. Grade
B dairies numbered 386, up 14 from December 2003.
Number of Commercial Dairy Operations in Missouri, December
Within Missouri's neighboring states, only Kansas shows a slightly growing
dairy industry, with the rest declining in cow numbers.

The graphs below reflect the latest cows numbers and milk production
per cow estimates in Missouri and surrounding states. Kansas recently pushed
into the top 20 states in milk production, based upon increasing cow numbers
and rapid increases in milk production per cow. That industry growth is primarily
due to large dairy farms in western Kansas.
