Cattle Auction Open, Mid-Session, and Close for 05/14/2013

Receipts: 1304 Last Week: 869 Year Ago: 1256

Compared to two weeks ago, yearling feeder cattle sold 2.00-4.00 lower on a
much lighter test. The calf market was unevenly steady to firm with instances
from 7.00-10.00 higher on 450-500 lb steers and 500-550 lb heifer calves. The
crowd was light with late corn planting finally in high gear on the first hot
day of the season. Supplies were much lighter than recent sales as the
availability of feeder cattle is tightening. Many of the best consignments of
calves were not weaned so several of the weight groups did not test the market's
full capability. Slaughter cows were 1.00-3.00 higher than last week with bulls
steady to 1.00 higher. Receipts included 13 percent cows and bulls with the
balance feeders. The feeder run had 43 percent steers and 57 percent heifers
with 58 percent over 600 lbs. Note: United Producers will have a Special Bred
Cow and Pair Sale next Tuesday.

Feeder Cattle Auction for 05/14/13

Receipts: 1705 2 Weeks Ago: 489 Year Ago: 732

Very few comparisons with the light receipts from the previous
auction two weeks ago; looking back to four weeks ago calves traded
mostly steady with yearling steers and heifers 2.00-5.00 higher.
Slaughter cows 5.00-7.00 higher compared to two weeks ago. Many of the
new crop calves showing up with more flesh than buyers desire which adds
a discount to the price. A good offering of cattle for this late into
the Spring with several loads of yearlings to go along with a healthy
supply of calves. Warmer and drier weather (at least for today) has
many farmers in the fields. Demand moderate to good and supply
moderate to heavy. Cows and bulls accounted for 8 percent of the run
and feeders 92 percent. In the feeder supply, steers and bulls made
up approximately 60 percent of the run; heifers 40 percent; steers and
heifers over 600 lbs totaled around 65 percent.

Scheduling note: The next feeder sale is Tuesday, May 28.

West Plains- Ozarks Regional Stockyards
Cattle Auction Report for 05/14/2013

Receipts: 3400 Last Week: 2105 Year Ago: 3911

Compared to last week, steers under 750 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, with
several 450-500 lbs 2.00-4.00 higher than last week’s sharp downturn. Weights
over 750 lbs although not well tested in the previous sale were 1.00-3.00 lower.
Heifers were steady to 2.00 lower, although 4 weights along with those of lesser
quality or more undesirable kinds sold 2.00-6.00 lower, spots 8.00 lower.
Supply moderate, with several pot loads of 800-1035 Lb steer cattle that
possibly had been held anticipating a stronger market that never did develop
because of high cost of gain. Locally, hay season is now open, as some
farmer/producers are just getting started, others awaiting the chance of rain
in the immediate forecast to pass, but with days like Tuesday there should be
little to no problem with the curing process. Supply consisted of 68 percent
steers, 32 percent heifers. Near 70 percent over 600 lbs.
