Southwest Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Sale
Joplin Regional Stockyards, Carthage, MO 5/17/13

Receipts: 297 Year Ago: 268

Sponsored by Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifers, Inc., Division
of Animal Sciences, Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association
in cooperation with University Extension, Commercial Agriculture Program,
MU College of Veterinary Medicine, Missouri Cattlemen's Association and the
Missouri Department of Agriculture.

All heifers in the sale had met minimum standards for reproductive
soundness, pelvic size, body condition and weight. A strict immunization
program had been followed including Brucellosis calf-hood vaccination and
tested negative to PI BVD. Heifers were bred to bulls meeting strict calv-
ing ease/birth weight EPD?s. Several were synchronized and artificially
bred. Projected calving dates were given with all heifers expected to calve
from mid-August thru November 30. The offering was screened for blemishes,
muscle, frame, body condition score (BCS), and disposition by a screening
committee, consisting of official graders from the Missouri Dept of Agri-
culture and USDA, then sorted into lots according to calving dates and sim-
ilar body types. There were 54 percent of the heifers artificially bred, and
46 percent were naturally bred. Several Tier Two heifers were included in the
offering. The quality, type and condition of the offering was good and the
heifers were in the 2nd and 3rd stage of pregnancy. There was a moderate
attendance at the auction and bidding was reserved. Sale average for the
297 head was 1525.00 which was 291.00/head less than the May 2012 sale.
