Jefferson City, MO Mon Dec 14, 2009 MO Dept of Ag/USDA Market News South Central Missouri Sho-Me Select Replacement Heifer Sale Mt. Grove, MO- Wright County Livestock Auction 12/12/09 Receipts: 109 Coordinated by Sho-Me Select Board with University Extension, Commercial Agriculture Program, MU College of Veterinary Medicine, Missouri Cattlemen Association and the Missouri Dept of Agriculture. All heifers in this sale had met minimum standards for reproductive soundness, pelvic size, frame size, muscle thickness, body condition and weight. They had undergone a comprehensive health program and were guaranteed bred. All heifers are expected to calve from late January thru late April, with projected calving dates given on each lot. Heifers were graded by MO Dept of Agri/USDA approved graders for blemishes then sorted into uniform lots according to projected calving dates and body type similarity. The 109 head of bred heifers were consigned by 9 producers selling in 45 lots with an average weight of 1043 lbs selling at an average price of 1006.00 per head. There were 15 lots (or near 30 percent) that were AI bred averaging 1086 lbs and averaged 1134.00 and 30 lots natural bred heifers averaged 1026 lbs and 953.00 per head. Supply light, with a high percentage either Angus(AN), Angus/cross(ANX) and Red Angus crosses(RAX), although there were some higher quality heifers within the few other breeds represented. Even a few really high quality Red Angus heifers on hand that didn’t seem to grab the interest they may have deserved. Demand uneven, buyers fairly selective or particular and in many cases somewhat difficult to read, also several single lots but majority in 2-3 head lots, with an occasional draft of 4 head and a single lot of 5 making up the sale order, which may have aided in developing some fairly wide price spreads within similar heifers. However, demand and interest was noted best on big stout early calving high quality ANX/RAX heifers that were projected to pretty much have their calving season wrapped up by end of March. Although some others created a spark of interest through their genetic and reputation practices. Price averages also suggest buyers preferred AI bred heifers, but at same time the majority of those consignments met the earlier mentioned criteria of being big stout and fairly fancy. Never the less, the big stout fancy, preferably AN/ANX and RAX, to calve early were readily absorbed and in most cases finding a fairly good demand.
