Southwest Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Sale

of Animal Sciences, Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association
in cooperation with University Extension, Commercial Agriculture Program,
MU College of Veterinary Medicine, Missouri Cattlemen's Association and the
Missouri Department of Agriculture.

   All heifers in the sale had met minimum standards for reproductive
soundness, pelvic size, body condition and weight. A strict immunization
program had been followed including Brucellosis calf-hood vaccination and
tested negative to PI BVD. Heifers were bred to bulls meeting strict calv-
ing ease/birth weight EPD’s. Several were synchronized and artificially
bred. Projected calving dates were given with all heifers expected to calve
from mid-January thru April 30. The offering was screened for blemishes,
muscle, frame, body condition score (BCS), and disposition by a screening
committee, consisting of official graders from the Missouri Dept of Agri-
culture and USDA, then sorted into lots according to calving dates and sim-
ilar body types. There were 41 percent of the heifers artificially bred, and
59 percent were naturally bred. Several Tier Two heifers were included in the
offering. The quality, type and condition of the offering was very good and
the heifers were in the 2nd and 3rd stage of pregnancy. There was a good
crowd on hand including many active bidders and several first time buyers.
Sale average for the 181 head was 1974.00 which was 541.00/head more than
the November 2011 sale. The top selling lot brought 2550.00 per head.

   Replacement Bred Heifers:  Large 1  3rd stage pkg. 1140 lbs 2300.00 per
head, 2nd stage 1122-1130 lbs 2000.00-2150.00. Large 1-2  2nd stage 1058-
1270 lbs 1600.00-1825.00 per head. Large 2  2nd stage pkg. 1085 lbs 1500.00.
Medium and Large 1  3rd stage 987-1074 lbs 2000.00-2350.00, 2nd stage 987-
1108 lbs fancy blacks and black whiteface 2250.00-2550.00, balance 1900.00-
2200.00 per head. Medium and Large 1-2  2nd and 3rd stage 987-1090 lbs most
1850.00-2150.00, couple lots 2nd stage 1650.00 per head. Medium and Large 2
2nd and 3rd stage 942-1025 lbs 1475.00-1750.00 per head. Medium 1  2nd and
3rd stage 915-960 lbs 1950.00-2150.00, fancy blacks and black mottles 2400.00-
2450.00 per head. Medium 1-2  2nd and 3rd stage 870-958 lbs 1400.00-1700.00,
pkg. 2nd stage 800 lbs 1350.00 per head.
