Feeder Cattle Auction for 10/12/17

   Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves 3.00 to 6.00 lower, 
except long-time weaned calves steady.  Slaughter cows and bulls steady
to 1.00 higher.  Demand moderate, supply moderate to heavy.  A wide price
spread between un-weaned and long-time weaned calves as Buyers are very
conscious of health and flesh condition this time of the year.  Near 13
percent of the receipts was replacement cows, slaughter cows and bulls.
The feeder supply included 44 percent steers, 43 percent heifers, 13
percent bulls, with 29 percent over 600 lbs.

   Compared to last week, steers sold steady to 6.00 higher on better quality. 
Heifers sold mostly steady. Several groups of quality calves were offered with a
few consignments of yearling cattle. Most of the calves were un-weaned, however
demand was good for the cattle with a health program behind them despite most of
them carrying some flesh. Supply was light to moderate. The feeder offering
included near 52 percent steers and bulls, and 48 percent heifers, with 40
percent over 600 lbs. Cows and bulls totaled 26 percent of the offering.
Slaughter cows sold steady. Slaughter bulls traded 2.00 higher.

   At this month's special dairy sale at the Producers Auction Yard,
demand was good on a moderate supply.  The supply consisted of 1 
percent Springer Heifers, 12 percent Bred Heifers, 2 percent Open
Heifers, 6 percent Fresh and Milking Cows, 2 percent Bred Cows and 29
percent baby calves.  The balance was made up of weigh cows and beef 
animals.  All quotes are on a per head basis for Holsteins unless noted 
otherwise.

    Compared to the previous auction from two weeks ago, feeder steers and
 heifers under 700 lbs steady to firm with the 600-700 lb steers 2.00-4.00
 higher.  Too few feeders over 700 lbs for a market test.  Slaughter cows
 steady.  Another active market with calves making up the majority of the
 offering.  Cattle futures set back a little on Thursday after a nice
 string of up days.  Feedlots selling some cattle for 111.00 which would
 be another dollar or so better than last week.  Feeder cattle supply
 included 61 percent Steers, 38 percent Heifers, and  1 percent Bulls.
 Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 32 percent.
