Green City - Green City Livestock Auction
Feeder Cattle Auction for 07/02/08

Receipts: 3934 2 Weeks Ago: 2844 Year Ago: 4758

Compared with the previous auction; feeder steers and heifers
4.00-6.00 higher. Slaughter cows 2.00 higher. A very active market
and a large crowd on hand for the annual July barbeque special with a
free ribeye sandwich lunch for everyone. Mostly yearlings offered with
about 35 full loads and the quality very attractive. Corn prices were
up nearly the thirty cent limit Wednesday, but so was the Live Cattle
Futures. Boxed Beef prices have been climbing rapidly the last two
weeks and most people expect the cash steer trade to take place on
Thursday for at least 100.00 and possibly more. Demand very good
and the supply moderate. Cows and bulls accounted for 2 percent of the
run and feeders 98 percent. In the feeder supply, steers made up
approximately 73 percent of the run and heifers 27 percent. Offerings
over 600 lbs totaled around 82 percent.

Feeder Cattle Auction Open, Mid-Session, and Close for 07/02/2008

Demand was very good for this week's advertised yearling special which
could very well become an annual event based on this year's results. Due to
seasonally light receipts over the last few weeks, price comparisons were not
possible but a definite higher undertone prevailed. Supply included several
large consignments of yearlings with buyers aggressive on all classes.
Attractive winter and spring CME Live Cattle contracts have caused cattle
feeders to turn a blind eye to record-high feed prices. Offering included 65
percent steers and 32 percent heifers with around 54 percent of the cattle
weighing over 600 lbs. Note: For the remainder of the summer schedule, St.
Joseph Stockyards will sell feeder cattle at 9:00 AM and slaughter cows at
12:00 PM on Wednesdays.

Cow and Bull Auction Report for 07/02/08

Receipts: 1000 Last Week: 1056 Year Ago: No-Sale (Holiday)

Compared to last week, slaughter cows traded 2.00-3.00 lower than last
week’s sharp upturn. Bulls 2.00-4.00 lower. Demand for bred cows, cows
with calves and turn-outs improved this week with a better selection and
some added interest. By now most farmers have their hay rolled up and
are weighing their last load of seed, although several weighed their
seed, then rolled up the stubble and foliage, either way the often-times
cursed fescue played a big role this go-round for many in the area.
Happy 4th.
