What is Missouri Forage and Grassland Council/Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative ?

  • MFGC/GLCI is the voice of Missouri's forage industry.
The Missouri Forage and Grassland Council is a group of forage and livestock producers, researchers, professors, agencies, industry representatives, legislators, and conservationists who share a common goal - speaking for the Missouri forage industry. It is a part of the American Forage and Grassland Council (AFGC), the voice of America's forage industry. Organizations such as MFGC/GLCI and AFGC promote and safeguard the interests of forage production and utilization across the American landscape.

  • MFGC/GLCI is the network for Missouri graziers.
Beginning at the affiliate (local) council level, producers interact with neighbors and associates to learn from each other. On-farm tours often take on a social nature as friends and peers share experiences and knowledge of successes as well as failures. These affiliates are tied together as part of the MFGC/GLCI, allowing each group to draw from a larger base including University and agency personnel, industry, and producers from across the entire state. As part of the AFGC, MFGC/GLCI has ready access to the most up-to-date research data and practical recommendations from top experts around the country and the world.

  • MFGC/GLCI provides education in forage production.
Working closely with producers and the University of Missouri, MFGC/GLCI organizes tours and "pasture walks" to demonstrate the different practices employed by various farms and industries. Besides the tours, the council holds an annual conference in the fall. Nationally renown experts share the stage with top producers in presenting everything from state-of the art research to practical advice on forage management and use. MFGC/GLCI and its affiliate councils help sponsor the University of Missouri Regional Grazing Schools. Beginning in 1999, MFGC/GLCI will become involved in grassland evaluation and hay contests for young people. Finally, MFGC/GLCI publishes Missouri Grasslands, a quarterly newsletter free to all members of MFGC/GLCI. Missouri Grasslands reports current research findings, tips for improving forage production and use, and a calendar of upcoming forage-related events.
