Rains Fail To Dampen Bull Sale

Heavy rains and reported tornados in southwest Missouri on March 31 made March go out like a lion. As for the Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Associations bull sale the “lionish” weather reduced the size of the crowd for the sale at Springfield’s Livestock marketing Center, but bidding was active by those attending.

Forty bulls marched through the ring in less than 50 minutes and posted an average price of $2102. The range in price went from $1400 to the top of $4100.

The $4100 price tag was placed on a black, polled Simmental consigned by Owen Brothers Cattle Co., Bois D’Arc. The buyer was Deer Creek Simmental, Welch, Oklahoma. The two Simmentals averaged $3100.

The largest number of bulls, as in most recent sales, were Angus. Thirty Angus bulls averaged $2125. Topping the breed at $3100 was Clearwater Farm, Springfield. The buyer was Les Cole, Stockton.

The six Charolais bulls posted a $1792 average. Their top-seller came from Beiswinger Charolais Ranch, Halfway. Bob J. Scott, Niangua claimed that bull with a $2150 bid.

The association introduced two composite breeds in this sale. One Balancer bull from K D Gelbvieh, Liberal. The red, polled bull sold for $1850 to James R. Bowers, Ash Grove. The Sim Angus bull form Owens Brothers brought $1550 with Floyd Massey, Lebanon taking him home.

Prior to the sale, the association paid tribute to Kenneth Gillig, Aurora who retired last November after serving the association as sale manager and treasurer for 35 years.

University of Missouri Extension regional livestock specialists assist the association by supervising the data gathering process at weaning and/or yearling weight gathering time. Breeder who would like to participate an on-farm testing program should contact their nearest livestock specialist. The next sale will be held on October 27.
