Corn & Soybean Stocks Sharply Above Year Ago
(Columbia, MO) - Missouri old crop soybean stocks in all positions on
September 1, 2005 totaled 15.6 million bushels, 183 percent above a year
earlier and the highest for this date since 1999. On-farm stocks in the
State totaled 9.2 million bushels, while 6.4 million bushels were in
off-farm positions.
Total old crop corn in all positions in Missouri on September 1, 2005
amounted to 55.6 million bushels, 3 times as much as a year earlier and
the highest for the date since 1993. On-farm stocks accounted for 34
million bushels, while off-farm positions totaled 21.6 million bushels.
September 1, 2005 wheat stocks in Missouri totaled 23.6 million bushels,
down 19 percent from a year ago and the lowest level since the record
low set in 1973. There were 3.5 million bushels on farms and 20.1
million bushels were in commercial facilities.
Old crop sorghum stocks in Missouri on September 1 totaled 1.03 million
bushels, 27 percent more than a year ago but 22 percent lower than the
average for this date for the past 5 years. Sorghum on farms accounted
for 600,000 bushels, while 434,000 bushels were in off-farm positions.
U.S. Grain Stocks
Old crop soybeans stored in the United States in all positions on
September 1, 2005 totaled 256 million bushels, up 127 percent from
September 1, 2004. Soybean stocks stored on farms totaled 99.7 million
bushels, up 239 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks are up 88
percent from September 1, 2004, to 156 million bushels. Indicated
disappearance for June - August 2005 totaled 444 million bushels, up 49
percent from the same period a year earlier.
Based on an analysis of end-of-marketing year stock estimates,
disappearance data for exports and crushings, and farm program
administrative data, the 2004 soybean production is revised to 3.12
billion bushels. This is a decrease of 17.3 million bushels from the
previous estimate. Planted and harvested areas remain unchanged at 75.2
million acres and 74.0 million acres, respectively. The 2004 yield, at
42.2 bushels per acre, is down 0.3 bushel from the previous estimate.
Corn stocks in all positions on September 1, 2005 totaled 2.11 billion
bushels, up 120 percent from September 1, 2004. This is the highest
September 1 stocks level since 1993. Of the total stocks, 821 million
bushels are stored on farms, up 87 percent from a year earlier. Off-farm
stocks, at 1.29 billion bushels, are up 148 percent from a year ago to
the highest September 1 level since 1988. The June - August 2005
indicated disappearance is 2.21 billion bushels, compared with 2.01
billion bushels during the same period last year.
All wheat stored in all positions in the U.S. on September 1, 2005
totaled 1.92 billion bushels, down 1 percent from a year ago. On-farm
stocks are estimated at 719 million bushels, down 9 percent from the
previous year. Off-farm stocks, at 1.20 billion bushels, are up 4
percent from a year ago. The June - August 2005 indicated disappearance
is 720 million bushels, down 6 percent from the same period a year
earlier. Durum wheat stocks in all positions on September 1, 2005
totaled 99.4 million bushels, up 9 percent from a year ago. On-farm
stocks, at 70.2 million bushels, are up 7 percent from September 1,
2004. Off-farm stocks totaled 29.2 million bushels, up 15 percent from a
year ago. The June - August 2005 indicated disappearance of 38.2 million
bushels is up 52 percent from the same period a year earlier.
Oats stored in all positions on September 1, 2005 totaled 113 million
bushels, 2 percent below the stocks on September 1, 2004. Of the total
stocks on hand, 71.2 million bushels are stored on farms, 4 percent
lower than a year ago. Off-farm stocks totaled 41.8 million bushels, 1
percent above the previous year. Indicated disappearance for June -
August 2005 totaled 59.9 million bushels, compared with 64.8 million
bushels during the same period a year ago. Grain sorghum stored in all
positions in the U.S. on September 1, 2005 totaled 57.0 million bushels,
up 70 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 5.90 million bushels,
are up 59 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 51.1 million
bushels, are up 71 percent from September 1, 2004. The June - August
2005 indicated disappearance from all positions is 56.2 million bushels,
up from 47.0 million bushels during the same period a year ago.
2005 Small Grain Estimates
Missouri winter wheat production in 2005 totaled 29.2 million bushels,
down 40 percent from last year's production of 48.4 million bushels and
10 percent below the August 1 forecast. Of the revised 590,000 planted
acres, farmers harvested a record low 540,000 acres for grain. Missouri
yields averaged a 54 bushels per acre, 2 bushels above last year but 7
bushels below 2003.
Missouri oat production in 2005 totaled 1.3 million bushels, double the
size of the 2004 crop. Of the 35,000 planted acres, 20,000 were
harvested for grain. State oat yields averaged 65 bushels per acre, up
15 bushels from 2004 average but 2 bushels below the record of 2 years
ago.
All wheat production in the U.S. totaled 2.10 billion bushels in 2005,
down 3 percent from the last forecast and 3 percent below 2004. Grain
area is 50.0 million acres, down fractionally from last year. The U.S.
yield is 42.0 bushels per acre, 1.0 bushel below the August forecast and
down 1.2 bushels from a year ago. The level of production and change
from last year by type are: winter wheat, 1.49 billion bushels, down
slightly; other spring wheat, 504 million bushels, down 11 percent;
Durum wheat, 100 million bushels, up 11 percent.
Oat production in the U.S. is estimated at 115 million bushels, 10
percent below the August 1 forecast and 1 percent below last year's 116
million bushels. The estimated yield is 63.1 bushels per acre, down 1.6
bushels from August and also down 1.6 bushels from a year ago. Compared
with last year, yields declined in all States except for those in the
Southeast, central and northern Great Plains, and the middle Mississippi
Valley. Harvested area is 1.82 million acres, 8 percent below the August
1 forecast but 2 percent above last year.
