Step 3: Design Criteria

Before beginning the construction of any animal housing or manure containment structure, consult with an engineer who is familiar with the design of agricultural structures. One way of finding an engineer is to use the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service Technical Service Provider (TSP) Locator. TSPs are individuals, entities, or public agencies certified by NRCS and placed on the approved list to provide technical services to their program participants. Finding a TSP that has manure handling and storage knowledge and experience may help you to locate a suitable engineer for your needs.

It is important to learn the detailed regulations concerning the design of the animal waste facilities to help ensure that it is designed up to Missouri's requirements. There are six main areas that need to be considered with the design.

Key Considerations:

Storage Period Requirements

Formed Manure Storage Structure

Unformed Manure Storage Structure

Compaction/Liner Requirements

Siting Requirements

Berm Requirements
