Weather information has implications on the design requirements for a manure storage system. A CAFO utilizing a wet manure handling
system is required to be designed to contain a series of rainfall events and a single rainfall event. This design storm event that
must be contained includes:
- 25-year, 24-hour storm event
- 1-in-10 year precipitation volume. This includes:
- 10-year, 10-day storm
- 10-year, 365-day rainfall
- 10-year, 365-day rainfall minus evaporation
The CAFO rules adopted by the United State Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) include provisions that will affect new swine,
poultry and veal/calf operations by requiring their design containment systems to be based on the single rainfall event
100-year, 24-hour storm instead of the 25-year, 24-hour storm.
Other requirements for stormwater containment include a minimum 1-foot depth on the surface of the storage
required to provide for storage of the catastrophic rainfall event and a minimum 1-foot freeboard above
the emergency spillway. Additional information that is required can be obtained on the
Design Criteria page
or by contacting your
local MDNR office.
A windrose diagram indicates the relative frequencies of different wind directions for a given station
and period of time. It is important to understand these wind direction patterns for they can show
the predominate direction that odors from your operation can remain more intense. Picking a location that
the predominate wind direction is away from neighbors or other populated areas with help reduce the nuisance
problems associated with odors from livestock production.
