2013 Swine Institute
The Commercial Agriculture Program annual Swine Institutes are designed to inform Missouri swine industry leaders of the latest research and analysis impacting swine production.
As the swine industry moves well into the second decade of the 21st century, many of the factors we have dealt with during the past five years have subsided, while new issues are beginning to emerge. Many of these issues will impact the industry far enough in the future, that it is difficult to know what adjustments can be made now in anticipation.
This year's Swine Institute will address anticipated issues and offer advice on "staying the course" in the interim. "Rapid Fire Topics" will present our Swine Focus Team members addressing Animal Welfare Audits, an update on Missouri CAFO rules regarding construction permits, and a biofilter and anaerobic digester update. Bob Broz, Extension water quality specialist with the University of Missouri, will provide an update on a nutrient reduction strategy for Missouri.
Attendees will receive insight from the National Pork Producers Council and the National Pork Board, and an update on the Farm Bill from FAPRI director, Pat Westhoff. Ron Plain, Missouri's state economist, will offer his popular market outlook forecast and update producers on COOL.
Economists Ray Massey and Ryan Milhollin will give a presentation on livestock insurance. Massey, John Lory, and Marcia Shannon will demonstrate how feed-manure optimization has the potential to benefit an operation.
This year's 'keynote' session will follow the evening banquet. Dr. Bryan Myers and Dr. Linda Hickam will address Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv). Dr. Myers will share his experiences with producers dealing with outbreaks of PEDv. Dr. Hickam will join Dr. Myers in discussing measures to take to avoid a PEDv outbreak at your facility. Dr. Hickam will address state animal health regulations and how to minimize spread of the disease should a major outbreak occur in Missouri.
